The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Creighton University invites applications for a full-time Research Associate. The individual will be involved in various laboratory research, experimentation, and technical activities for a materials chemistry research laboratory.

 

The research associate will join a dynamic group comprised of mainly undergraduate researchers from diverse backgrounds. They will prepare and perform experiments in materials chemistry, including the synthesis of materials and collection, recording, and analyzing data and results. They will be involved in preparing manuscripts and technical reports and will disseminate results/analyses at scientific conferences. Basic responsibilities are listed below.

 

  • Maintaining and communicating experimental protocols, results, and analyses among lab members
  • Interfacing with both internal and external resources as appropriate to obtain technical directives and advice
  • Help train and supervise the activities of other full- or part-time laboratory research staff, including students and technicians
  • Maintain training and continuing education about laboratory and chemical safety
  • Regularly survey inventory and order laboratory supplies and reagents
  • Prepare common laboratory reagents
  • Disseminate results to the research community
  • Perform routine laboratory procedures and maintain laboratory records
  • Interfacing with departmental or university personnel as required

 

In addition to research activities, the research associate will have opportunities to support educational outreach efforts by engaging local high school teachers and students in chemistry and materials science projects. Interested individuals from groups traditionally underrepresented in STEM are particularly welcome and encouraged to apply.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, materials science, or a related field
  • 0-2 years of experience in a research lab
  • Analytical and creative thinking to problem-solve and develop novel experimental designs and protocols
  • Experience or interest in nanomaterial synthesis, processing, characterization, 3D printing
  • Experience or interest in chemical analysis and materials characterization instrumentation and results interpretation, such as spectroscopy (e.g., NMR, FTIR, Raman), electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and/or thermal analyses

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher in chemistry, materials science, or a related field
  • More than 2 years of experience in a research lab
