The Director of Human Resources reports directly to the Asoociate Vice Presient for Human Resources and serves as a member of the Human Resources Leadership Team.  The director will contribute to the attainment of Creighton's strategic and tactical human resources priorities and provide excellent service to academic and administrative units.  The director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Human Resources Generalist team with a focus on attracting and retaining a diverse, highly engaged and effective workfore that supports the University's Jesuit, Catholic mission and strategic initiatives.  Creighton employs over 4,800 faculty and staff in 35 states witht the majority of employees being located in Omaha, Nebraska and at our newer campus location in Phoenix, Arizona.

As the leader of the HR Generalist Team, the Director collaborates to ensures that all HR solutions and processes align with HR policies and procedures, client needs and Creighton University strategic priorities. Acts as a liaison on the full spectrum of HR functional areas including but not limited to HR policies and procedures, employee and labor relations, engagement, onboarding, retention, management and staff development, performance management and coaching, organizational effectiveness, compliance and service delivery.    

Additional duties include the following:

  • Consult with leadership and professional staff on a variety of human capital issues and contribute to the development and implementation of human resource strategies, policies and practices. Act as central point of contact and provide leadership and direction to the HR team with respect to all human resource operations, and support the Schools and Departments leadership in connection with achievement of optimal performance, development and retention of staff and faculty.
  • Administer the University's Employee Relations (ER) function; including recording, tracking and analyzing ER data to determine trends and issues. Provide HR consultation and guidance to resolve identified and anticipated problems with a key focus on maintaining a positive ER climate.
  • Manage the University's Organizational Development (OD) function; including creating and leading programs to address the University's learning needs, including on-the-job operational training, department specific training, employee and manager development, and new hire on boarding.
  • Lead and/or participate in various initiatives and special projects: e.g., employee opinion survey and exit interview data interpretation; and make recommendations for organizational improvements and best practices.
  • Build and cultivate strong relationships with leadership and managers by understanding business objectives and providing HR solutions
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence. 
  • Define and utilize metrics to provide ongoing and ad-hoc information to senior leadership.
  • Identify and track key performance indicators related to HR services

Requires a bachelor’s degree in Human Resources
Minimum of 10 years of relevant senior-level HR experience in a complex environment with 5 years of managerial experience leading a team of HR professionals.

Experience in higher education, academic healthcare or health system setting preferred
SPHR, SHRM-SCP, CIR preferred
Experience with attracting, developing and retaining a highly motivated, diverse and engaged workforce.
Knowledge of principles and procedures for employee recruitment, selection, compensation and benefits

Excellent written/verbal communication, interpersonal, organizational and time management skills
Ability to influence change
Proficient in MS Office Suite to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
Skills using various social media recruiting platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter
Able to develop and implement effective talent acquisition strategies for various roles in various departments within the University

Knowledge of mentoring and coaching principles
Proficiency skills in MS Office Suite to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

Experience with budget planning, forecasting and fiscal management of an operating budgeting
