Position Title:  DIO/Associate Dean, Graduate Medical Education (Omaha campus)

School/Department/Division:  School of Medicine, Graduate Medical Education, Creighton University

Reporting Structure:        Direct:  Dean, School of Medicine          

Position Effort:  1.0 FTE (0.80 FTE for DIO/Associate Dean and 0.20 FTE clinical)


Duties and Responsibilities:

Serves as Designated Institutional Official (DIO) for the Creighton University Graduate Medical Education Program in all matters related to Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs with the School’s clinical partners such as CHI Health, VAMC, and rural sites

Engage in the education, training, and supervision of faculty, residents, and medical students in all GME site locations

In addition to the Department Chairs, serve as a primary contact for all Omaha GME program directors

Will be the primary GME representative in developing and maintaining a strong, effective, initiative-taking, and collaborative team-based relationship with VAMC leadership.

Work with leaders, department chairs, program directors, and program coordinators to monitor and enhance the quality of GME programs, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Faculty professional development (professionalism, Title VII/IX, teaching/evaluation skills, etc.), with implementation strategies specific to the resources and capacity, in collaboration with the School’s Office of Faculty Affairs
  • GME research/patient quality and safety initiatives in all sites, in collaboration with clinical affiliate quality and safety leadership  
  • GME faculty, staff, and trainee well-being
  • Compliance with policies and/or processes, such as ACGME, LCME, hospital (e.g., Joint Commission), School of Medicine, Creighton University

Participate and assist in leading GME activities or initiatives to support overall GME excellence, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • GMEC meetings, Annual Institutional Reviews, and program director meetings
  • Work closely with the VAMC Associate Chief of Staff for Education to assure compliance with VAMC/Federal Rules specific to the GME programs
  • Follow-up of personnel issues, including external review of GME trainee academic performance for select residents who are underperforming, providing guidance on remediation plans for GME trainees, GME trainee grievances, informal complaints, and Title VII/IX complaints

Assist in preparation and/or oversight of program and institutional reports to the GMEC, ACGME, and other stakeholders, including:

  • Program’s and the Sponsoring Institution's Annual Updates and response to citations in the ACGME Accreditation Data System
  • Annual Institutional Review
  • Self-study reports, Special Reviews, and site visits
  • Institutional policies and guidelines

Work with department chairs and program directors to develop and promote institution initiatives and processes, including.

  • Faculty development for teaching skills
  • Optimizing the Clinical Learning Environment

Support and mentor select faculty, fellows, and residents to Optimize GME processes (e.g., resident and program evaluation) in the program and prepare them for educational leadership positions

Collaborate with medical education program and Physician’s Assistant program leadership and the clinical affiliates in the oversight and management of the clinical learning environment

Collaborate with decanal staff of the School in leadership of the School of Medicine, which includes active participation in the management and governance activities of the School of Medicine

Collaborate with leadership in the School’s Office of Research and departmental leadership in the development and support of research activities that can include residents and fellows, to include the development of GME research fellowship positions

Collaborate with the School leadership in the development of and implementation of strategic initiatives in support of the strategic plan of the School of Medicine and in alignment with the strategic planning of clinical affiliates, including the development of new residency and fellowship programs and expansion of existing programs


Minimum Qualifications:

  • MD degree or equivalent medical degree from a medical school of recognized standing
  • Qualification for appointment as Associate Professor
  • Should have seven (7) years or more of post-doctoral experience in a recognized medical school or major medical research/scholarship institution
  • Eligible for unrestricted Nebraska Medical License at time of assignment
  • Board certification or Maintenance of Board Certification is required for candidates with an MD degree
  • Evidence of effective medical education activities, scholarly/research activity, educational, or clinical administration is required
  • Scholarly/research or administrative activity may be in areas affecting health, patient care, or methods and techniques of medical education
  • Evidence of the generation of new knowledge in clinical care, care processes, or medical education in improving the quality and effectiveness of the primary teaching function of any medical school
  • Demonstrated history of increasing positions of responsibility in medical education administrative activities that involve curriculum development and oversight and include with the development of course work for medical students and/or residents/fellows

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Leadership of a curricular component of a GME program (i.e., a series, workshops, longitudinal curriculum)
  • Participation in a core committee within a GME program (i.e., curriculum committee, program evaluation committee, clinical competency committee, academic half-day, or research committee)
  • Experience serving in prior GME or Department leadership roles such as Program Director, Associate Program Director, Department Chair, or Vice Chair
