The Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education is a key leadership position with special focus on the GME programming within the Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance. 

Reports to the Associate Dean for GME and DIO in Omaha, NE for all academic and accreditation-related matters. In addition, works in collaboration with Phoenix Regional Dean to lead the academic infrastructure for medical education under Creighton University School of Medicine and the Executive Director of the Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance for all administrative and operational matters.

The Assistant Dean will provide direction and oversight for the Creighton Phoenix residency and fellowship programs as identified by the following primary responsibilities:

    • Ensures program compliance with ACGME rules, regulations, and accreditation standards in collaboration with the Graduate Education committee, residency program leadership, departmental chairs, and under the supervision of the Associate Dean.
    • Monitors non-ACGME programs and ensures they comply with the Creighton GME Non-ACGME policy. Monitors and assists these programs to ensure they stay in compliance with any outside accrediting bodies
    • Assists Phoenix programs in their completion of their Annual Program Evaluation with special focus on SWOTs, AIMS and Action plans.  Implements dashboards and other tools required by the Associate Dean needed to monitor these programs and their Annual Program Evaluations.  
    • Collaborate with the Graduate Medical Education Committee in the planning and conduct of Special Reviews (as defined in the ACGME Institutional Requirements) of residency programs including scheduling, organizing, and completing necessary meetings, interviews, and documentation.
    • Collaborate with the Associate Dean and residency program leadership in the preparation for and conduct of ACGME self-study visits, Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) visits, and other ACGME site visits as required for the maintenance of program accreditation.  Ensures program are in continuous readiness for accreditation site visits.
    • Member of the Phoenix Council of Deans, participate in the various meetings and committees serving the Creighton School of Medicine in Phoenix.
    • Maintain approximately 20% clinical activity in the appropriate discipline. 


  • Serve as a major liaison with Phoenix program residents, residency program leaders, Alliance administration, and leaders of Alliance partner hospitals to ensure an effectively integrated and optimal GME operation.
    • Promotes an equitable environment and works with the Associate Dean on EEO/Title IV  and legal matters.
    • Provides sound guidance, support, and problem solving for program leaders and residents on a wide range of residency personnel and program issues. Responds to concerns or inquiries about the activities and operation of residency programs in a manner requiring considerable knowledge about policies and procedures.
    • Ensures the development and maintenance of healthy clinical learning environments in all locations where residents and clinical fellows train
    • Acts as ombudsman for resident complaints and concerns outside the chain of command
    • Promote Creighton Phoenix residents’ involvement in quality improvement and patient safety in the clinical learning environment.
  • Oversight of Phoenix GME Office
    • Support GME Manager and Alliance Executive Director in the development, submission and/or monitoring of several budgets or operating accounts.
    • Work in partnership with GME Manager to establish priorities for the local GME office. Maintain record of decisions made and/or actions taken, initiates follow- up with other concerned parties and prepares summaries and reports for review.
    • Develops GME employee’s knowledge of accreditation.  Works with GME office employees to create a supportive environment to Phoenix Program Directors and Program Coordinators.  Provides GME expertise to help GME office employees be highly functional and drive continuous quality improvement.
  • Recruitment and Retention
    • Implement resident recruitment and retention strategy; Develop best practices to optimize resident and fellowship retention and to contribute meaningfully to the workforce needs of the Alliance and Arizona
  • Academic Role
    • Teaches residents and medical students in the appropriate discipline
    • Engages in a variety of contacts outside of the GME office in order to obtain needed information, develop needed resident educational support, etc.  Reads current literature and attends regional and national professional meetings to keep apprised of the changes and current trends within GME; applies information to daily work routine; provides feedback to program administrators regarding new information
    • Advances residents’ knowledge of basic principles of research and allocates local educational resources to facilitate resident involvement
    • Meets with program directors on a regular basis in a one to one format, serving as a mentor to the PD’s. 
    • Works with program for assisting struggling residents with remediation and processes according to Creighton GME policy and collaborates with the Associate Dean in these matters. 
    • Collaborates with the Associate Dean, the Alliance Executive Director and residency program leadership with any projects as needed.
      • Utilize independent judgment in administrative functions in the areas outlined in the Creighton GMEC charter.
      • Work with residency program directors and other School faculty in efforts toward innovative practices in resident education and facilitate scholarly activity in resident education.


 Potential candidates for an Assistant Professor are encouraged to review the Faculty Handbook at:



  • MD or DO degree Completed ACGME residency training, with current ABMS Board Certification.
  • Current State Medical Licensure and eligible for Arizona Medical Board Licensure.
  • Minimum 3-5 years’ previous experience in GME administration, preferably as Program Director in accredited training program.
  • Current or previous academic appointment at Associate Professor level.
  • The ability to collaborate and build relationships with important stakeholders in GME, including, but not limited to other academic systems, clinical partners, and members of the School.
  • Strong Communication skills with the ability to communicate ideas honestly and clearly and respect the views and opinions of others on the team.  Must be able to be a clear, effective communicator who can communicate in a constructive and respectful way. 
  • The ability to adapt to change and drive positive change for the good of the residents and fellows.
  • Excitement at working in new academic and educational areas outside of previous experience in collaboration with subject matter experts in the various disciplines.
  • A creative and innovative approach to education, tempered by the willingness to continually assess the efficacy of such approaches.
