Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Clinical Research the position will provide leadership, guidance and mentorship to faculty and staff on clinical research efforts, oversee internal and external collaborations in research, develop and expand major clinical research programs, on the Phoenix campus of the Creighton University SOM. The position responsibilities for the Assistant Dean are provided as follows:

 

Position Assignment: 0.10 FTE

 

Position Responsibilities:

 

  • Provide a vision and strategic direction toward growth of clinical research and enhancement of extramural funding
  • Provide mentoring and leadership to junior faculty on clinical research careers
  • Support the development of subspecialty research fellowships
  • Assist with the development of models to support medical school faculty doing clinical research
  • Oversee the Vice Chair for Clinical Research in his/her efforts to:
    • Determine the infrastructure needed to best support clinical research efforts at Creighton SOM Phoenix
    • Provide structure and guidelines for the student/resident/fellow/faculty who are involved in research projects including clinical trials scientific reviews, and case series.
    • Develop a plan for the statistical and data analytic support.
    • Develop clinical research educational and training programs in trial design along with CU SOM Departments of Med Ed and Clinical Research as well as the Office of GME.
    • Support developing standards for submission to the Creighton IRB
  • Identify and facilitate research collaborations among faculty within the SOM and other clinical and basic research units/department on campus, community partners, other universities, and research institutions as well as state, regional and federal organizations. These should include efforts to encourage participation by minority and disadvantaged communities.
  • Serve as a resource to department chairs and associate/assistant deans in the areas of research and scholarly activities related to faculty recruitment, development, and retention
  • Encourage a collaborative relationship with CU Sponsored Programs
  • Serve as the Creighton Phoenix SOM representative on clinical research related SOM committees and projects.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or equivalent Doctor of Osteopathic (D.O.) is required.
  • A minimum faculty appointment as an assistant professor with an associate professor or professor rank preferred.
  • Successful administrative experience in investigator initiated, grant sponsored, or industry sponsored clinical research, including the overseeing of management of budgets, facilities, assessment, and strategic planning.
  • Experience identifying research and creative activity funding opportunities and facilitating grant awards.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Successful experience in community engagement and outreach.
  • A commitment to research, excellent leadership skills and a strong commitment to diversity and social justice.

 

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Additional preferred qualifications include at least five years’ experience in medical school (or equivalent) administrative and leadership positions related to research in the Health Sciences.
  • The ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work cooperatively with colleagues, leaders and staff at all levels, and the ability to work independently are all desired attributes for this position.
